Martin Cordiano  (Buenos Aires, b. 1975)

 

Martin Cordiano practice delves into the ways space signify us and, in turn, how it is signified by us. He aims to renegotiate cultural agreements involving the comprehension of our surroundings through absences, limits and encounters. He understands space as a malleable matter: with a narrative, a memory, a transforming ability and the possibility to lay across language, subjects and time. Rather than defining space, he questions its meanings, using the construction of space as a metaphor for language construction. He explores the contradiction between our seemingly dynamism and the rigidness and static condition of the places we inhabit through fragments and symbols, aware that the sum of parts can be bigger than the whole.

 

Cordiano is a visual artist currently living and working in London. He holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts by the University of Central Saint Martins. He has participated in several exhibitions internationally such as 57th Venice Biennale,1st BienalSur, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Margin of Error, Balin House Project, London, UK. Espacio de Uso, Walden Gallery, Buenos Aires (2016), Common Places, Knoerle & Baettig, Wintherpur, Switzerland (2015), My Buenos Aires, La Maison Rouge, Paris (2015), 13th Istanbul Biennale (2013) and Biens communs II, MAMCO, Museé d’art moderne et contemporain, Geneve (2012). Among his awards and residencies he was selected for the Bursary Awards at the Royal British Society of Sculptures (2013), the Red Mansion Art Prize to make a two-month residency in Beijing (2012) and the MAC/VAL Residency (Musée d’Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne), Paris (2011).

La práctica de Martín Cordiano explora las formas en la que el espacio nos significa, y a su vez, es significado por nosotros. Su obra es una constante renegociación de acuerdos culturales a fin de entender el entorno espacial a través de sus ausencias, límites y encuentros. Entiende el espacio como algo maleable en tanto que puede ser narración y memoria, capacidad transformadora y entidad que atraviesa lenguaje, subjetividades y tiempo. Más que definir el espacio, cuestiona sus significados, utilizando la construcción del mismo como metáfora de la construcción del lenguaje. Asimismo, cuestiona la contradicción existente entre el aparente dinamismo de las sociedades y la rigidez de los lugares que habitamos a través de sus fragmentos y símbolos, consciente de que la suma de las partes puede ser mayor que el todo.  

Cordiano es artista visual que actualmente vive y trabaja en Londres. Tiene una Maestría en Bellas Artes por la Universidad de Central Saint Martins. Ha participado en varias exposiciones internacionalmente como 57th Bienal de Venecia, 1era BienalSur, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
